Sometimes, suddenly in a passing moment I see something that makes a striking impression on me. The awakened feeling that a visual impression, an object, the lighting inspires might simply be of beauty, or perhaps emblematic of a greater reality, or sometimes it is just something about the contrast of light, shadow, and reflection. I might be walking downtown for lunch, or shopping, passing by some flowers, or cycling in an alleyway…
For that reason I always carry both a camera and a sketchbook. Both the photo and the book enable me to make notations about our surrounding world, the splendor and sometimes strangeness. Mostly one takes it all for granted, but sometimes the moment is right!
Viewing the raw photo later on, the original feeling might have evaporated - but the memory persists. In recent years I discovered and applied techniques learned in painting to express what initially gripped me. The state of digital technology has so vastly improved where today one can achieve effects not previously attainable either in paint, or what one can call ordinary photography.
I use the photographic image as a starting point for painting images digitally using a palette of electronic tools and devices. I am a purist with no inhibitions about adopting technology to express as best I can the joy of conscious experience: my aim is art is an outward expression of inner life regardless of the medium – Photography or painting. It is an evolving journey. Such is the history of Art!
