Subway Sketches Book
In 2015 I started sketching regularly in the subway. As a painter I have always been sketching and drawing, but now I was doing portraits several times a day. At first it took me almost a whole year to fill up a book. Starting in February of that year I started drawing portraits of subway passengers several times a day, filling a book every month and half or so (over 100 in a book).
I found myself with over a dozen books of hundreds of drawings and pondered what I could do with them. So I took some of them and put them in a book. The ones in this book are from 2016. The practise of drawing transforms commuting into a daily adventure, sometimes meeting all sorts of people - either the subjects or onlookers. All drawings in this book are done on the spot and not redrawn or edited later. The books I use are 4" x 6" - convenient for carrying in any pocket. I use a simple ratchet/propelling type pencil with a fine lead, .5 - .7 mm. But the size and type of the pencil are not really so important. The kind of materials I use really depends mostly on how convenient it is to carry them around. But I got so used to the simple pencil, it is now my preferred tool.
